What are the Career Options for Sociology Students?

Students looking to take up a course in sociology may lack knowledge about their career options, and this can adversely affect the student’s choice on the field in which to focus. This list may help you make a better choice about the focus of your sociology degree:

• Social work – a group of roles that basically focus on improving the quality of life of disadvantaged members of society. A social worker is responsible for bridging the gap between the available services and the target beneficiaries through research, charities, and collaboration with the government. Among the issues that you will be addressing as a social worker include drug abuse, mental health issues, homelessness, and child protection.
• Counseling – involves the provision of individual, group, or familial consultations that allow clients to talk about issues affecting them. A counselor can specialize in particular problems, a particular population, or in a particular style of counseling such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
• Probation/prison services – if you major in crime and punishment in your sociology course, probation/prison services is one of your potential careers. Your roles as a prison and probation officer will range from administrative and supervisory, to working in the field with prisoners under incarceration or prisoners serving their terms under probation. As a probation/prison officer, you will be required to assess the risk of recidivism, train, and advise, and maintain updated records on your clients.
• Community development – another prominent career for sociology students is in community development, whereby the student works in collaboration with government agencies and charities to improve the wellbeing of communities, families, and individuals. As a community development agent, your roles will involve the establishment of projects in which you believe could bring about positive changes in the lives of your target population. Tasks within this role include organizing fundraisers, managing budgets, mediation between groups, and coordinating activities with various stakeholders.
